NYPD Cops Wound Off-Duty Corrections Officer
Armed Man Pointed Gun At Police
They yelled, "Police Don't Move," at the armed man in front of the Bronx deli. When he wheeled and pointed his gun in their direction, four of the five NYPD officers fired. Later, they learned that the man was an off-duty corrections officer at Rikers Island who may have been intoxicated at the time of the early Saturday morning shooting.
The NYPD says the officers opened fire on Victor Hernandez, 35, after he ignored numerous orders to drop a gun. The encounter happened at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday in the borough's Morrisania section.
Though the investigation into the shooting is still in its early stages, detectives believe Hernandez spent hours drinking at Legends club and bar on E. 161st St. in Melrose, the Daily News reported.
Apparently intoxicated, Hernandez left the bar just after 3:30 a.m. and was spotted walking along E. 161st with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his gun at his waist, according to police.
The NYPD says the officers were not in uniform, but wore badges around their necks and identified themselves as police.
Authorities say Hernandez was treated at a hospital and that his 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
Hernandez was arrested on charges of menacing and reckless endangerment. He has been suspended without pay from Rikers.
